EASTERN WRESTLING LEAGUE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

Our EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ended January 17, 2010, is Shawn Fendone, who is a junior at Edinboro University.  Shawn is from Salem, NH, and this season is starting for the Fighting Scots at 197 pounds.

Fendone was injured this past fall, and did not compete until the PSAC Tournament on December 5, 2009.  He placed second in that event, being pinned in the first period of the 197-pound finals by Clarion freshman Alex Thomas.  This past weekend, however, Mr. Fendone has let the wrestling community know that he's healthy, and ready for a leading role, as he helped elevate Edinboro to two dual-meet wins.

On January 16, 2010, Edinboro beat Buffalo 19-17.  In that meet, Fendone topped the Bulls' nationally ranked Jimmy Hamel, gaining a crucial 9-2 decision.  On January 17, in the Fighting Scots' dual meet against Clarion, Fendone reversed his December PSAC result, by pinning Alex Thomas in the first period (in 2:36), thus helping Edinboro to a 25-13 team win.  Edinboro now is undefeated in its last 27 dual meets vs. EWL opponents, sporting a record during that span of 25-0-2.

Also, the EWL tips its headgear to the Clarion University team and program.  On January 15, 2010, the Golden Eagles defeated Eastern Michigan in a dual meet, marking a milestone for Clarion athletics.  That win was the 500th dual-meet victory for Clarion, in its proud 51-year history.

Congratulations to Shawn Fendone, our EWL Wrestler of the Week, and the Clarion wrestling program on number 500!
