EASTERN WRESTLING LEAGUE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 16, 2008, is Nick Hyatt. Hyatt, a redshirt sophomore at Lock Haven University, is competing this season at 125 pounds, and is from Boyertown, Pennsylvania. This past year Hyatt redshirted. During the 2007 season, however, he competed at 125 and 133 pounds, placed sixth at Mat-Town, finished sixth in the PSAC's, and grabbed fifth place at the 2007 EWL Tournament.
On Saturday, November 15, 2008, Lock Haven initiated its dual meet schedule, by taking on fifth-ranked University of Missouri at home. Although the Bald Eagles came out on the short end of the 32-9 final team score, Hyatt stole the show by pinning Missouri's nationally ranked Troy Dolan in the first period.
Hyatt opened up with a take-down 14 seconds into the match, and quickly turned Dolan for back points. Hyatt twice more racked up back points through the middle of the first period. Leading 9-0, Mr. Hyatt again turned Dolan, and registered the fall at the 2:29 mark.
Good job Nick Hyatt, our EWL Wrestler of the Week.
In addition, the EWL tips its headgear to nine other EWL wrestlers who represented our conference well this past weekend at the West Virginia Open and at the Binghamton "Bearcat" Open tournaments. Winners at the WVU Open from the University of Pittsburgh were Brad Gentzle at 133 pounds, Eric Albright at 141, and Ryan Tomei at heavy weight. David Jauregui and Mark Tsikerdanos, both of West Virginia University, shared the crown at 149 pounds, and WVU team mates Robert DeSano and Lance Bryson were co-champions at 184 pounds. The Mountaineers' Kyle Rooney took the title at 197.
Meanwhile, up at the Bearcat Open, Bloomsburg University's Jason Guffey cobbled together an excellent string of wins to place first at 133 pounds. Congratulations to Mr. Guffey and all the other EWL guys who won tournaments this past weekend!
We have an exciting EWL event coming up this week, on November 19, as the Pitt Panthers host the Bloomsburg Huskies. This upcoming match will kick-off the EWL's intra-league dual meet season. During the season all seven of the EWL teams wrestle each other for the Eastern Wrestling League's dual meet championship. The first of these 21 encounters for the 2009 season's championship is this week's Pitt/Bloomsburg brawl.
Come on out and support your favorite college wrestling team! Thank You.
