The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 4, 2007, is Joe Fendone, who wrestles heavy weight for Edinboro University. Joe is a junior from Salem, New Hampshire. This past weekend, nationally ranked Edinboro won all three of their matches at the Edinboro Duals, and heavy weight Fendone sealed the Fighting Scots' victories against Army and against the University of Maryland.
Edinboro's first opponent was Mercyhurst College, a good Division II program, and Edinboro won that match by a final score of 36-3. In their second match of the day the Fighting Scots wrestled Army, and after nine bouts led the Black Knights by only three team points. Joe Fendone then took the mat, needing a win to seal the team victory. Mr. Fendone came through with a 9-2 decision over his opponent, Nate Thobaben, an NCAA qualifier who had placed third in the 2007 EIWA Tournament, and Edinboro won the meet 21-15.
Edinboro's final match of the day was against the University of Maryland, a team that had won the 2007 ACC dual-meet title, and has an excellent dual-meet team this season, too. After nine bouts, the Fighting Scots trailed the Terps by two points. Fendone, however, then took the mat against young Pat Gilmore, who gave Joe a very good go for two periods, until Fendone took charge in the third period, starting from the top position, wore the Terp down, turned him and pinned him. Fendone's pin earned Edinboro an 18-15 team win. Way to go Joe!
Congratulations to Joe Fendone, our EWL Wrestler of the Week.
