Lock Haven University's Seth Martin and Edinboro University's Deonte Penn

The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestlers of the Week (co-winners) for the week ended December 31, 2006, are Seth Martin and Deonte Penn.  Martin, a senior from Selinsgrove, PA, wrestles 157 for Lock Haven University, and Penn, a senior from Solon, OH, competes at 165 pounds for the Edinboro Fighting Scots.  This past weekend both grapplers claimed titles at the Southern Scuffle, the huge Division I wrestling tournament held each year in Greensboro, NC.

Martin cruised into the 157-pound finals with four wins - a 3-1 decision, a pin, a 7-0 shutout, and a 13-4 major.  In the finals Mr. Martin topped nationally ranked EWL rival, Matt Hill, by a score of 4-1.  Deonte Penn won five matches prior to the 165-pound championship bout, by 12-4, pin, 7-3, 9-0, and 4-3.  In the finals, Mr. Penn scored a stunning third-period pin (the 41st of his college career) over highly ranked Steve Anceravage of Cornell University.

Congratulations to Seth Martin and Deonte Penn, our Eastern Wrestling League Wrestlers of the Week!

Also, the EWL would like to tip its headgear to the Edinboro University wrestling team.  The Fighting Scots placed fourth in the 32-team Southern Scuffle, racking up a total of 127.5 points.  Big 12 and Big 10 powers, Missouri and Minnesota, finished first and second, respectively, in the team race.  Cornell University bagged third place.  Good job guys and thank you for representing the EWL so well in a national wrestling event.

America needs wrestling, so come on out and support your favorite team.  Thank you.
