Lock Haven University's Seth Martin

The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended December 3, 2006, is Seth Martin, a senior from Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, who competes in the 157-pound weight class for Lock Haven University.  This past weekend Martin won the huge Penn State Open, striding through his 73-man bracket with six wins to grab the title.

Mr. Martin started off at the Penn State Open with a first-period pin, then racked up wins by scores of 9-1, 5-1, 10-1, and 5-2.  Seth's opponent in the finals was Penn State's Nathan Galloway, who Seth had decisioned 6-3 the week before in the Mat-Town Tournament finals.  This time Martin defeated Galloway 2-0.  There was no scoring in the first period, and Seth tallied an escape in the second.  Then Martin started on top third period and rode Galloway out for the win.

Congratulations to Seth Martin, our Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week!

The EWL also would like to tip its headgear to the Edinboro Fighting Scots and the Pittsburgh Panthers.  Both teams wrestled very well this past weekend.  The 14th-ranked Fighting Scots wrestled 19th-ranked Michigan State on December 1 at the Erie Civic Center, won seven of ten bouts, and came away with a 26-13 victory.  Bout winners for Edinboro were: Gregor Gillespie (149), Matt Hill (157), Deonte Penn (165), Phil Moricone (174), Alex Clemsen (184), Jim Gibson (197), and Joe Fendone (285).

The University of Pittsburgh competed in the two-day, 47-team Las Vegas Invitational Tournament and finished a healthy 11th.  Panther place-winners were Drew Headlee (5th at 133 pounds), Matt Kocher (4th at 157), and Keith Gavin (3rd at 174).  Good job guys!

Please come out and support your favorite wrestling team.  America needs wrestlers and wrestling.  Thank you!
