Edinboro University's Ron Doppelheuer
The EWL wrestler of the week for the week ended November 21, 2004, is Edinboro University's Ron Doppelheuer. On November 20, Doppelheuer, wrestling at 141 pounds, racked up three pins and one major at Cornell University's Body Bar Invitational Tournament.
In the preliminary round Ron Doppelheuer pinned his Ithaca opponent and in the quarter finals decked Cornell blue-chip Jordan Leen, a four-time Tennessee state high school champ. In the semi-final round Ron majored his University of Maryland foe. In the finals Mr. Doppelheuer grabbed a 5-0 lead on top-seeded, nationally ranked, Sean Markey of The Citadel and then cradled him for the fall in 2:36.
From Connellsville, Pennsylvania, Doppelheuer is a junior. Ron has placed twice in the PSAC's and twice in the EWL Tournament, grabbing a total of 49 wins the past two seasons. Edinboro head coach had nothing but praise for Doppelheuer's Body Bar performance and predicts that this is the start of a break-out season for his 141-pound ace.
Congratulations to Ron Doppelheuer, our Eastern Wrestling League's wrestler of the week!
Also, a tip of the headgear to five other EWL grapplers who won tournament titles this past weekend. They are: Matt Lebe (WVU/157) who won the Navy Classic; Frank Edgar (CUP/141) who captured the ESU Open; Jeff Ecklof (Pitt/149) who won the ESU Open; ESU Open champion Marcus Surin (CUP/165); and winner of the Michigan State Open Keith Gavin (Pitt/157). Gentlemen - Well Done!
