Cleveland State University's  Marcus Effner

The Eastern Wrestling League's wrestler of the week for the week ended January 16, 2005, is Marcus Effner, who competes at 157 pounds for Cleveland State University.  Marcus is a true freshman out of Garfield Heights High School in Ohio, where he was coached by Mike Arnold.

At Wendy's Duals, held on January 16 in Ashland, Ohio, Effner racked up a 3-0 record.  Mr. Effner won his first match of the day against Joe Henning of Northern Illinois, by a score of 6-3.  Tied 3-3 at the start of the third period, the young Viking then tallied a reversal and riding time to secure the victory.

In his second bout Effner trailed Andy Keller of Central Michigan late in the match, then rallied for a takedown and back points at the buzzer to tie the score at 8-8.  Marcus then scored a takedown seconds into the sudden-victory period to win the match.  In his final match of the day Effner gained a gutsy 4-3 decision over Gary Skoch of Ashland.

Three difficult matches and three wins.  Well done Marcus Effner, our Eastern Wrestling League wrestler of the week!

By the way, this coming weekend Cleveland State's hosting the NWCA National Duals.  It's a show-case event that college wrestling fans across the county thoroughly enjoy.  America needs wrestling!
