GOWING, MORAN, JOSEPH & THOMAS WIN AT BLUE GOLD
(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion’s wrestling team had an exciting set of Blue-Gold matches on Wednesday night at Tippin Gymnasium with Thomas Gowing (Jr. Eugene, Oregon) at 125, Cameron Moran (Jr. James City/Kane)at 141, Scott Joseph (Sr. Export) at 174 and Alex Thomas (So. Seaford, De.) at 197 earning starting lineup spots for Saturday’s trip to the PSAC Championships.
Starting at 125, Gowing bested Trey Hicks (So. Amityville, N.Y.) two matches to one to earn his PSAC spot. Gowing won the first 6-4 with a takedown in overtime, while Hicks rallied for an impressive 7-4 win in the second matchup. Gowing scored a takedown, escape and riding time to win 4-1 in match three.
At 141 pounds Moran, from nearby Kane, defeated former Ridgway standout and Penn State transfer Colby Pisani two matches to zero. Moran won the first bout 4-2, then came back and posted an impressive 7-0 win in the second. He had two takedowns and a near fall to post his win the shutout.
Joseph defeated Ryan Darch (Fr. Batavia, N.Y.) two matches to zero at 174. Clarion’s starting 174-pounder two years ago who sat out last year with illness, Joseph defeated Darch 3-1 in the first bout and 3-2 in the second. Joseph’s takedown with 15-seconds remaining in the second bout broke a 1-1 tie.
Maybe the best of the matches were at 197 between Thomas and Clint Podish (Jr. Sycamore), both starters a year ago. Thomas at his normal 197 and Podish, who was trying to from184 from a year ago. Podish defeated Thomas in the opening bout 6-3, but Thomas rallied to even the series with an 8-6 in match two. Thomas led 4-2 in the third period of match three when Podish hit a reversal to tie the match at 4-4. Thomas escaped to go ahead 5-4, and the two were rolling through moves in the final ten seconds with Thomas holding on to win.
Clarion’s lineup for PSAC’s on Saturday will also include Joe Waltko (So. Allison Park) at 133, Anthony White (Fr. Phila.) at 149, James Fleming (So. West Mifflin) at 157, Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (Jr. Tashkent, Uzbekistan) at 165, Steven Cressley (So. Punxsutawney) at 184 and Quintas McCorkle (Jr. Alexandria, Va.) at heavyweight.

18th and McCorkle 20th by Amateur Wrestling News… Waltko, White, Fleming &
Abdurakhmonov were 2-0 at Blue-Gold… Clarion was third at PSAC’s last year.
