Bloomsburg Falls to Pitt in Wrestling, 30-3
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team saw its 10-match winning
streak come to an end with a 30-3 loss to the 10th-ranked (NWCA/USA TODAY) Pitt
Panthers 30-3 on Sunday afternoon in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) matchup.
Bloomsburg's lone win came at 285 pounds where Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris
Knolls) posted a 2-0 win over Joel Yahner. At 157 pounds Bloomsburg's Frank
Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked eighth, saw his 19-match winning
streak come to an end with a 7-2 loss to Donnie Tasser.
The Huskies, ranked 10th in the NWMA Mid-Major poll, go to 12-4, 0-1 in the EWL,
while Pitt goes to 10-1, 3-0 in the EWL. Bloomsburg wrestles at West Virginia on
Saturday at 7 p.m.
Match-By-Match Summary
125—There was no first period scoring between Bloomsburg's Sean Boylan (Seaville,
NJ/St. Marks) and Pitt's Anthony Zanetta, ranked 16th. Zanetta opened the second
period with an escape then scored a takedown to grab a 3-0 lead with 1:24 left
in the period. Boylan escaped with 1:10 left in the period before Zanetta got a
takedown with 12 seconds left in the second to lead 5-1. In the third Zanetta
got a point after Boylan got his second stalling warning. Boylan then escaped
before Zanetta had another takedown to lead 8-2. Boylan then escaped before
Zanettea got a takedown to go on top 10-3. With riding time Zanetta won 11-3.
133—Pitt's Shelton Mack, ranked 20th, opened the match with a takedown over
Bloomsburg's Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central). Late in the first Wilcox
escaped making it 2-1 after one period. In the second Wilcox escaped to tie the
score at 2-2 for the only scoring of the period. In the third Mack got a
takedown and three near fall points to up 7-2. Wilcox escaped with 45 seconds
left, but Mack went on to post the 8-3 win with riding time.
141—Pitt's Travis Shaffer opened the match with BU's Derek Shingara
(Shamokin/Shamokin) by getting a takedown. That would be the only scoring of the
period. Shaffer started down to begin the second period and escaped 10 seconds
into the frame. Later working on the edge of the mat Shaffer got a takedown and
three near fall to lead 8-0 after two periods. In the third Shingara got a point
for stalling by Shaffer. Shingara then got an escape to make the final 9-2 with
riding time.
149—Pitt's Tyler Nauman, ranked #14, got a quick takedown of Bloomsburg's Bryce
Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), ranked 30th. Nauman then tilted Busler
and got three near fall points, then later two more to go on top 7-0 after one
period. In the second period there was no scoring. Busler started the third on
top. Nauman escaped to lead 8-0. With riding time Nauman posted a 9-0 win.
157—Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked eighth,
faced off with Pitt's Donnie Trasser. Hickman was near a takedown with under a
minute to go in the period that Tasser worked out of. Tasser then picked up a
takedown with 10 seconds left in the first to lead 2-0 after one. In the second
Hickman escaped to start the period. Tasser then worked a takedown after a
struggle and led 4-1 with 31 seconds left in the period. Hickman then escaped
with seven seconds left making it 4-2 after two periods. Tasser was down to
start the period and escaped to lead 5-2. Tasser then got a takedown with 40
seconds left to lead 7-2 which is how the match ended.
165—Bloomsburg's Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) faced off with #31 ranked
Tyler Wilps. In the first period there was no scoring. Wilps was down to start
the period and escaped for the first point of the match, then quickly picked up
a takedown to go up 3-0. Smith escaped then picked up a takedown to tie the
score at 3-3. Wilps then escaped to go back on top 4-3 after two. In the third
Smith was down to start, but could not escape Wilps with Wilps winning 5-3 with
riding time.
174-Bloomsburg's Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), ranked #33 wrestled
Pitt's P.J. Tasser. Despite some good action there was no first period scoring.
Tasser started the second period down and worked an escape 30 seconds into the
period, then got a takedown to go up 3-0 after two period. Dessino started down
to open the third. Dessino finally worked an escape with 20 seconds left in the
match, but Tasser held off Dessino's scoring attempts to win 4-1 with riding
time.
184-Bloomsburg's Sam Shirey (Beaver Springs/Midd-West) opened his match with
Andy Vaughn getting a takedown. Vaughn got a reversal go make it 2-2. Vaughn
then controlled the remainder of the period leaving it at 2-2 after one period.
Shirey took down to open the second. Vaughn go three near fall points with 40
seconds left in the frame and led 5-2 going to the third. Vaughn started the
third down. Vaughn escaped to open the third and later got a takedown to lead
8-2. With riding time Vaughn won 9-2.
197-Pitt's Matt Wilps, ranked fifth, faced Bloomsburg's Richard Perry (Meriden,
CT/Middletown), ranked 31st. Wilps got a takedown of Perry about two minutes in.
That was the only scoring of the first period. Wilps was down to start in the
second and escaped to lead 3-0. Wilps then recorded a takedown before Perry
quickly escaped making it 5-1 with 55 seconds left in the second. There was no
further scoring in the second. In the third the wrestlers started neutral. Wilps
got a takedown to lead 7-1. Perry then worked a reversal to make it 7-3. Wilps
then escaped putting the wrestlers neutral with Wilps on top 8-3. Wilps got a
takedown and with riding time won 11-3.
285-Bloomsburg's Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) faced Pitt's Joel Yahner.
There was no scoring in the first period. Walsh took down to start and quickly
escaped for the first score of the match. There was no further scoring in the
period. Yahner took bottom in the third. Yahner attempted an escape, but Walsh
slammed him back to the mat early in the period. Walsh then held on for the
remainder of the period and won 2-0 with riding time.
