CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University wrestling team won its home opener, knocking off crosstown rival John Carroll, 29-9, in front of a large crowd returning for Alumni Night.

"We had a great crowd on hand tonight," said head coach Ben Stehura. "It was great to see so many people out and I know I speak for the team when I say we appreciate the support. Those who came out to watch got to see some good wrestling, and it was nice to start the home portion of our schedule with a victory."

Ben Willeford started things off on the right foot for Cleveland State, picking up six team points when he pinned Jeff Holy in 4:27.

Nick Flannery followed with a 11-3 major decision at 133 pounds as he was aided by a superb first period when he recorded three takedowns.

Josh Palivoda used a takedown in the second to propel him to a 4-0 win over Doug Hayes at 141 pounds.

Lawrence Cavello recorded the second fall of the night when he pinned Mauricio Gonzalez in 3:56.

Tanner Lemon and Terner Gott had the tightest match of the night, with Lemon pulling out a 14-12 victory with a takedown in the sudden victory period.

Corey Carlo, 3-0 at the Wrestle for a Cure Duals in Harrisburg, Pa. on Nov. 12, won his fourth straight match with a 12-5 win over Sean Gill. The junior recorded two takedowns in both the first and third period to to help his cause.
The Blue Streaks won the next three matches, taking the 174, 184 and 197 bouts.

Chris Weber closed the night off with an 11-3 major decision over Alec Barker.

The Vikings, now 2-2 in duals, will return to the mat when they host Eastern Michigan at 7:00 p.m. on December 1.
