Bloomsburg Sweeps Pair in Wrestling

BUFFALO, NY—It was a successful homecoming for Bloomsburg University wrestling coach John Stutzman as he returned to his alma mater, the University at Buffalo, and led the Huskies to two wins. Bloomsburg beat Buffalo 23-10 and then later took down Gardner-Webb 34-6.

Stutzman, a 1995 graduate of Buffalo, saw his Huskies rally from an early 7-3 deficit to post a 23-10 win. With Bloomsburg trailing by four points after 141 pounds, Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) won by major decision to tie the score at 7-7. Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney), ranked 8th/9th nationally, also posted a win by major decision, to put the Huskies up 11-7. After a win for the Bulls at 165 pounds, the Huskies closed out the match by scoring decisions in the final four weights to win by 13.

In the victory over Gardner-Webb, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two matches. But, the Huskies got a win by major decision from Derek Shingara (Shamokin/Shamokin) to cut the lead to 6-4. After Matt Hicks (Allentown (Annapolis, MD)/St. Mary's, MD) won by forfeit at 149 pounds, Hickman blanked his opponent 7-0 at 157 before Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) scored a win by major decision at 165 pounds. Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) then scored a win by fall in just 1:14 at 174, before Bloomsburg closed out the match with three wins by major decision to easily earn the win.

Bloomsburg, 7-3, will be idle till Dec. 29 when it goes to Lock Haven for the Mat Town Invitational.
