BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team rallied from an early
deficit to post a 34-7 win over Cleveland State in an EWL matchup Saturday
afternoon at the Nelson Field House.
The Huskies lost the opening match to fall behind 4-0 before Nick Wilcox
(Greene, NY/Greene Central) won at 133 pounds to make it 4-3. After Cleveland
State's Josh Palivoda won 2-0 over Craig Barker (Lecanto, FL/Citrus), the
Huskies were penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.
From there the Huskies won the remaining seven bouts, including wins by fall
from Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) at 149 and Mike Dessino
(Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) at 174.
Before the match started the Huskies honored the two senior members of the team,
Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Jeremiah Biddle (Slate Hill, NY/Minisik
Valley).
Bloomsburg improves to 15-6, 2-3 in the EWL, while Cleveland State falls to
6-12, 0-4 in the EWL. The Huskies wrestle at Binghamton on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7
p.m.
Match by Match—
125— Cleveland States Ben Willeford struck first with an early takedown over the
Huskies Elliot Zackoski (Scranton/West Scranton) to take a 2-0 lead. Late in the
second period, Willeford picked up three back points to increase his lead to
5-0. Early in the third, Zackoski was taken down, giving Willeford a 7-0
advantage. Willeford maintained his lead to take the match by a 9-0 major
decision.
133— The Huskies Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) scored first with an
early takedown over Nick Flannery of Cleveland State. Within seconds, Wilcox
picked up three back points to increase the lead to 5-0, but Flannery responded
with a reversal to close in the gap. The first period ended 5-2 in favor of the
Huskies Wilcox. The second period consisted of Wilcox preserving his 5-2 lead
over Flannery. Late in the third, Wilcox earned three back points to win by an
8-2 decision.
141—The first period was scoreless between Bloomsburg's Craig Barker (Lecanto,
FL/Citrus) and Cleveland States Josh Palivoda. The Vikings Palivoda scored an
early escape in the second to take a 1-0 advantage over Barker. Palivoda
controlled the third period and won by a 2-0 decision with riding time.
149— Bloomsburg's Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) jumped out of
the gates with a takedown and two back points to go up by a score of 4-0.
Without wasting time in the second period, Busler earned another takedown to
increase the lead to 6-0 over Lawrence Cavello of Cleveland State. Busler was
heading into the third with a comfortable 6-0 advantage. Nine seconds into the
third period, Busler pinned Cavello to win by a fall in 6:09.
157— Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) for the Huskies came out strong
over Tanner Lemon of Cleveland State with an early takedown, but Lemon quickly
responded with an escape. Hickman headed into the second with a 2-1 lead over
Lemon. Early in the second, Hickman earned an escape and a takedown to pull
ahead 5-1. More points came for Hickman in the third with an early escape and
three takedowns over the Vikings Lemon. Lemon escaped three times in the third
but it was not enough to prevent Hickman from winning by a 13-4 major decision.
165—Late in the first period, Bloomsburg's Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor)
had a takedown over Corey Carlo of the Vikings. Smith wasted no time in the
second with a reversal to go up 4-0. Carlo posted his first point of the match
with a late second period escape to close up the lead. Carlo made things
interesting in the third with a reversal, but Smith escaped quickly. The Huskies
Smith would hold on and earn a 6-3 decision.
174—Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) of Bloomsburg got on the board first
with a takedown over Koort Leyrer of Cleveland State. Just seconds after,
Desinno pinned the VikingsLeyrer in 1:09.
184—In the first period, Bloomsburg's Sam Shirey (Beaver Springs/Midd-West)
racked up a takedown and three back points against CSU's Aric Thurn. Early in
the second, Thurn countered with a reversal and an escape, but Shirey responded
with two takedowns to pull ahead 9-4. Thurn earned an escape and a takedown in
the third, but Shirey escaped to make it a 10-7 match. The Huskies Shirey would
go on to win by an 11-7 decision.
197— Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) came out strong in the first period
with four takedowns and a reversal over Bobby Blankenship of Cleveland State.
Blankenship picked up four escapes over Perry to make it an 8-4 match. The
second was controlled by Perry with two more takedowns to increase the lead
14-6. Perry picked up a trio of takedowns in the third period to extend the
lead. Perry went on to win by a 23-9 major decision with riding time.
HWT—The Huskies Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) posted an early takedown
over Garry Yarborogh of Cleveland State. Yarborogh then went down with an injury
shortly afterwards making Walsh a winner by forfeit.
