CLARION WRESTLERS DECISIONED BY RIDER & OHIO UNIVERSITY

(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion University wrestlers Anthony White (149), James Fleming (157), Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (165) and Alex Thomas (197) all went 2-0 on Sunday, but the Golden Eagles fell short in losing to Rider 22-18 and OhioUniversity 28-18 in NCAA Division I Wrestling.

The Golden Eagles fell to 3-8 overall and will host Pitt on Thursday night at Waldo S. Tippin gym.

Clarion won five of the ten bouts against Rider, but bonus points turned out to be the difference.

Down 13-0 to Rider after three bouts, the Golden Eagles mounted a furious comeback to nearly win the meet. Freshman Anthony White started the comeback with a 9-4 win over Zac Cibula at 149. White had four takedowns to secure the win.

Sophomore James Fleming, ranked #6 at 157-pounds, stepped up and pinned Ramon Santiago at 2:31 to pull the Eagles to within 13-9.

Bekzod Abdurakhmonov used two takedowns to decision Jimmy Resnick 5-0 at 165 and the Golden Eagles were back to within 13-12.

Scott Joseph lost an 11-4 decision to Rob Morrison at 174 and Steve Cressley was pinned by James Brundage at 184 to put the Broncs back in front 22-12.

Alex Thomas used a second period rideout to defeat Joe Ferber 1-0 at 197 and Quintas McCorkle decisioned Evan Craig 4-3 at heavyweight to make the final 22-18.

The script was similar as the Eagles lost 28-18 versus Ohio University.

Down 13-0 Clarion rallied back to tie the match 13-13. The rally started with Anthony White posting a 7-6 decision over Darrin Boing at 149. White led 6-4 late in the match, Boing scored a takedown with about 30-seconds left to tie, but White escaped and won 7-6.

At 157 the match was scoreless between Fleming and Chris Kline in the second with Fleming on top and in control. He turned Kline and pinned the Bobcat at 3:38 pulling the Eagles to within 13-9.

Abdurakhmonov tied the match at 165-pounds when he majored Steve Wilson 14-0. Bekzod had two takedowns and three near falls plus riding time for the win.

Joseph was pinned by Purdue at 174, and Steven Cressley lost by disqualification at 184 after a re-start with 15-seconds to go in the bout. Clarion also lost a team point.

Alex Thomas brought the crowd to its feet when the Golden Eagle sophomore rallied for a pin at 197. Down 5-0 after the first period, he drew within 5-2 with a second period reversal. In the third he took Kyle Sanders down and then used a half nelson to pin him at 5:37.

Quintas McCorkle battled Jeremy Johnson to the second tie breaker before losing 5-4. McCorkle led 3-2 entering the last 25-seconds, but Johnson received a penalty point when McCorkle was called for grabbing Johnson’s headgear with about 20 seconds left to tie the match.

CLARION NOTES: White’s record is 20-9, Fleming 24-2, Abdurakhmonov 22-6, Thomas 15-9 and McCorkle 19-11… Thursday against Pitt will be Senior Night at Clarion.
