LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team was downed
34-7 tonight by No. 20 Illinois in a non-conference dual.
With the loss, the Bald Eagles slip to 5-11 on the year.
The Illini, who lost to No. 3 Penn State 23-13 last night in Happy
Valley improve to 5-5-1.
The Bald Eagles got a pair of the wins tonight in a match were Illinois
got bonus points in six of its eight wins.
Nick Hyatt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and Mike Khoury (Edgewater,
N.J./Saint Joseph Regional) picked up Lock Haven’s wins.
Hyatt was fired up at the start of his 125-pound bout and earned an
early takedown to set the tone for his major decision win over Logan
Arilis. Hyatt led 2-0 after one period and quickly racked up valuable
riding time.
With just 15 seconds left in the third period, Hyatt earned a takedown
and quickly tacked on two back points, leading to the 10-2 major.
The Illini featured a trio of wrestlers ranked in the top-13 nationally
from 133 to 149 and they took advantage as Illinois got bonus points by
way of a pin, tech fall and major.
Khoury earned a hard-fought win at 174 as he needed extra time to take
down Dan Stelter.
After seven minutes of action the two were deadlocked at 1-1. They were
still scoreless after one overtime period and Khoury was able to ride
Steltler out for 30 seconds in the second overtime.
Khoury brought the Thomas Fieldouse crowd to its feet with a quick
escape in the third overtime. After earning the escape with 26 seconds
left, Khoury nearly scored a takedown and hung on for the 2-1 win.
The Bald Eagles only have a pair of Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) duals
to close out the regular season. On Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. LHU
travels to local-rival Bloomsburg and LHU closes out the regular season
with a home dual against Clarion on Sunday, Feb. 20 (3 p.m.). The EWL
Championships are set for Sunday, March 6 at Bloom.
