- Edinboro Wins Two of Three to Take Seventh at Virginia Duals
-
- HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 8, 2011) – The Edinboro wrestling team won two of
three matches this afternoon to finish seventh at the 31st Annual Virginia
Duals. The Fighting Scots, seeded eighth, disposed of Bucknell 26-12
in its opening consolation match, then fell by a 21-15 score to Virginia.
In the seventh place match, Edinboro staged a big rally, winning five of the
final six bouts, including the last four, with a pair of pins to claim a
24-21 win over Buffalo. Winners of three of five matches over the two
days at the Hampton Coliseum, Edinboro is now 4-7-1.
- Eric
Morrill (133 lbs.), Johnny Greisheimer (157 lbs.), Chris Honeycutt (184
lbs.) and Shawn Fendone (197 lbs.) (left) all went 3-0 on the day.
Chris Hrunka (174 lbs.) and Ernest James (hwt.) were 2-1 and Torsten
Gillespie went 1-1, with head coach Tim Flynn choosing to sit him and
forfeit the 149 lb. match against Buffalo and 19th-ranked Desi Green.
The two are scheduled to meet again next Sunday, January 16 in a dual match
at Buffalo. In addition, Gillespie had already been through a
meat-grinder, facing seventh-ranked Frank Molinaro of Penn State,
fourth-ranked Kevin LeValley of Bucknell in a rematch of their NWCA All-Star
Classic bout, and Derek Valenti of Virginia, who has been ranked at times
this year.
-
Edinboro was trailing 12-10 after the 165 lbs. match, but the Fighting Scots
went on to win the final four matches. That included a fall by James
and a major decision by Honeycutt. The feature match showcased
Gillespie and LeValley, with LeValley claiming an 8-2 decision and remaining
undefeated at 18-0.
- The
Virginia match saw both teams win five matches, but the difference was a
pair of pins for the Cavaliers. Virginia picked up falls at 125 and
165 lbs., with the other eight matches decided by decisions.
Honeycutt, ranked third by InterMat at 184 lbs., won a 3-2 decision over
18th-ranked Jon Fausey in the top match.
- It
marked the second time Edinboro had lost to Virginia. The two met
previously at the Hershey Duals, with UVa. prevailing 25-13.
- The
loss dropped Edinboro into the seventh place match against the Bulls. UB
jumped out to a quick 18-3 lead with pins at 125 and 141 lbs. along with the
forfeit at 149 lbs.
- The
Fighting Scots started their comeback with Johnny Greisheimer winning by
fall over Mark Lewandowski at 5:46. The sophomore won four of his five
matches over the weekend to improve to 15-9.
- After
UB’s John-Martin Cannon won an 8-4 decision at Ethan Saylor at 165 lbs.,
Chris Hrunka came back with a strong showing at 174 lbs., capturing a 4-2
decision over Brian Sheehan. Honeycutt improved to 16-0 with a 6-1
decision over Jimmy Hamel at 184 lbs.
-
Edinboro still trailed 21-15 entering the last two matches, but Shawn
Fendone took care of that as he pinned Tyler Peter at 2:44. Redshirt
freshman Ernest James, in his first instance of having a dual on the line
when he took the mat, won an 8-1 decision over Josh Peters to hand the win
to the Scots.
