Buffalo Edges Fighting Scots 18-16
BUFFALO, NY (Jan. 16, 2011) – One week after defeating Buffalo 24-21 in the seventh place match of the Virginia Duals Edinboro had a rematch with the Bulls on Sunday. Part of a men’s basketball/wrestling doubleheader at Alumni Arena, the Fighting Scots followed the script that has plagued them all year, digging a big deficit in the lower weights before dominating the upper weights. Unfortunately, the hole was too big as Buffalo avenged last week’s loss with an 18-16 victory. The Fighting Scots fall to 4-8-1 while UB improves to 7-5.
Buffalo jumped out to a n 18-3 lead with wins in five of the first six matches. Two swing matches in particular hurt the Fighting Scots. In a matchup of nationally-ranked wrestlers at 149 lbs. UB’s Desi Green (24-5), ranked 19th by InterMat and 20th by Amateur Wrestling News, upset Torsten Gillespie, 5-1. Gillespie, now 14-7, came in ranked 11th and 13th, respectively. The two did not meet at the Virginia Duals.
A week ago Johnny Greisheimer won by fall over Mark Lewandowski at 157 lbs. This time Lewandowski won a 6-2 decision over the Boro sophomore. That leaves Greisheimer with a 15-10 ledger.
Edinboro’s lone win in the first six bouts was 3-2 decision for Eric Morrill over Kevin Smith at 133 lbs. It was a matchup of former national qualifiers, with Morrill, 13-8, currently ranked 19th by Amateur Wrestling News and Smith, who is 24-11, 20th.
The Fighting Scots won the final four matches but only picked up bonus points in one match. At 174 lbs. Chris Hrunka evened his record at 12-12 with a 5-2 decision over Brian Sheehan. Second-ranked Chris Honeycutt remained perfect at 17-0 with a 10-5 decision over UB’s Ron Majerus.
Shawn Fendone followed with his seventh straight win at 197 lbs., winning a 13-0 major decision over Jimmy Hamel. That gives Fendone a 17-8 record. Ernest James closed out the match with one of his biggest wins of the year, as the redshirt freshman won a 5-2 decision over Brett Correll at heavyweight. James is now 12-10 while Correll falls to 20-11.
Edinboro was hoping to win its 150th match with Tim Flynn at the helm, but that will now have to wait until next Saturday, January 22 when the Scots face Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. and Lock Haven at 6 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
