Wrestling falls to Rider 24-15 in Bald Eagles season-opening dual
BELLEFONTE, Pa. – The Bald Eagles jumped out to early 9-0 lead tonight, thanks to two straight wins, including a pin at 125 by Nick Hyatt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), but the Lock Haven University wrestling team (0-1) dropped its season-opening dual to Rider University (1-1) 24-15 at Bellefonte High School.
For the second straight year, Hyatt opened his dual-meet season with a pin. The redshirt-junior quickly went to work on Rider’s Tim Travisonno and earned a takedown just 10 seconds into the match. Hyatt’s aggressive start paid off for him and the Bald Eagles as he earned the fall just 1:10 in, putting LHU up 6-0.
Redshirt-sophomore John Trumbetti (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) put Lock Have up 9-0 after he earned a hard-fought 8-5 decision over RU’s Jimmy Kirchner. Trumbetti’s takedown just nine second into the bout set the tone as he racked up 2:20 of riding time in route to the win.
Rider won the next three bouts, taking a 12-9 advantage, before Kevin Dufresne (Orange, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) tied the match at 12-12.
Dufresne’s bout at 165 was an exciting one and his hard work paid off with 7-3 win over Rob Morrison.
After a Rider pin at 165, The Haven got a big-win from redshirt-junior Jeremie Cook (Venice, Fla./Venice). Cook shutout Rider’s Mike Miller thanks to two takedowns, including one with two seconds left in the match.
At heavyweight, Dan Craig (Paw Paw, Mich/Allegan) did everything he could to upset No. 19 Ed Bordas, but Bordas edged the Bald Eagle 2-0 in an exciting bout to close out the night.
Lock Haven returns to action on Saturday, November 28, when the Bald Eagles host the Mat Town Open.
