Bald Eagles fall to #14 Penn State 32-6; Trumbetti and Craig pick up wins for LHU

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - John Trumbetti (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) and Dan Craig (Paw Paw, Mich./Allegan) picked up wins for the Lock Haven University wrestling team (0-3), but it wasn't enough as the Bald Eagles fell to No. 14 Penn State (6-1-1) 32-6 today in Thomas Fieldhouse in front of a near capacity crowd. With Lock Haven trailing 6-0, Trumbetti picked up a 7-4 win over PSU's Bryan Pearsall. In the final bout of the day, Craig upset No. 12 Cameron Wade 6-1.

The Nittany Lions quickly went up 6-0 after No. 11 Brad Pataky pinned Lock Haven's George Ester 50 seconds into their 125-pound bout. Trumbetti looked to help LHU bounce right back and thanks to a takedown in each of the first two periods he did just that. The redshirt-sophomore racked up 1:58 of riding time to earn the hard-fought win over Pearsall. Trumbetti's win cut the PSU-lead to 6-3.

Penn State went on to win the next seven bouts with the Nittany Lions grabbing bonus points in four of them. In one of the day's more exciting bouts, Lock Haven's Derek Caldwell (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) was edged 8-6 in overtime by Penn State's Justin Ortega at 174 pounds. Caldwell, a redshirt-junior making his first start of the year for Lock Haven earned an escape with just three second left in the match to tie things at 6-6 and force the overtime period. Ortega however recorded the sudden victory takedown less than 10 seconds into the extra frame.

In the day's final bout, Craig earned a solid 6-1 upset-win over Wade. Craig got an early single leg on Wade and took him down in the opening seconds of the bout. Craig quickly went to work and tallied two back points to go up 4-0. Craig led 4-1 after two periods and held on for the 6-1 win after racking up 2:04 of riding time.
