Bald Eagles pin down Millersville 36-9
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – First year head coach Robbie Waller picked up the first win of his career tonight as the Lock Haven University wrestling team (1-3) rolled past visiting Millersville University (0-2-1) 36-9.
The Bald Eagles won seven of 10 bouts and earned bonus points in six of them, including four pins as LHU picked up the lopsided win over the Marauders.
LHU jumped out to an early 12-0 lead thanks to back-to-back pins by George Ester (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and John Trumbetti (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) at 125 and 133 pounds.
The Haven also got pins from Kevin Dufresne (Orange, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) and Dan Craig (Paw Paw, Mich./Allegan) at 165 and heavyweight.
At 184 Jeremie Cook (Venice, Fla./Venice) picked up tech fall and Harry Turner (Howell, N.J./Howell) followed that up with a major decision at 197.
LHU’s other win came from Brock Parker (Canton, Pa./Canton), who won 5-3 at 141.
The win marked the first for Waller and his staff, all of whom are in their first year at the helm of the Bald Eagle program.
The win also marked the 23rd straight over Millersville for LHU, who improves to 36-3-1 all-time against the Marauders in a series that dates back to 1949.
Ester put Lock Haven up 6-0 after a second-period pin. He was the aggressor from the start of the match and earned two first period takedowns and led 12-1 after the opening period. Ester ended the match with Matt Devenstine at the 3:23 mark.
Trumbetti made it two LHU falls in a row as he needed only 1:06 to pin MU’s Justin Fegley.
With LHU already leading 15-6, Dufrense gave The Haven another six points after a pin at the 5:17 mark of his match with Jeremy Brooks.
Cook looked like a technician at the 184 on the way to the tech fall win as time expired in the second period. He set the tone with five first period takedowns of Millerville’s Jason Foor.
Turner followed up Cook’s tech fall with a hard-fought major of his own. Turner was leading Josh Marquard 7-1 late in the third and held the advantage in riding time, but Marquard was also nailed for stalling just as the bout came to close, giving Turner the eight-point advantage with 2:19 of riding time.
In the final bout of the night, Craig led 10-2 with 3:55 of riding time when he ended the bout by way of pin at the 4:05 mark. Craig dominated the match from the start and earned a takedown just eight seconds in.
Craig ended the first period with 2:52 of riding time as he rode out Millersville’s Chase Godfrey.
LHU held a 21-5 advantage in takedowns.
Lock Haven returns to action on Friday, January 15 at 7 p.m. when the Bald Eagles travel to the University of Pittsburgh to kick off Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action.
