Bald Eagles roll past Cleveland State for first EWL win; Haven wins 8-of-10 bouts

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team (2-5, 1-2 EWL) won 8-of-10 bouts as the Bald Eagles picked up their first league-win of the year, downing visiting Cleveland State (2-12, 0-2 EWL) 33-6. The Bald Eagles won the first five bouts of the afternoon, helping them jump out to a commanding 17-0 lead. The win was first Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) win of the year for LHU. Nick Hyatt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) set the tone for LHU from the opening whistle. Hyatt was the aggressor from the start and put LHU up 5-0 after a tech fall at 125. Hyatt’s aggressive style was evident up and down The Haven’s lineup as the Bald Eagles held a lopsided 18-5 advantage in the takedowns. Hyatt’s tech fall was the first of four bonus-point wins for Lock Haven. Junior Evan Kolb (Coopersburg, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), who was filling in for John Trumbetti (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph’s Regional) put forth a tremendous effort at 133. Kolb scored an early takedown, which set the tone for his 8-3 win over Zech Huff.

Owen Wilkinson (Beverly Hills, Fla./Hartland), who was back in action for the first time since the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships looked as if he was back in form. Wilkinson won 4-1 to put LHU up 11-0. Wins by Zach Kell (Ickesburg, Pa./West Perry) and Seth Creasy (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area), at 149 and 157 made it five in a row for LHU. Cleveland State posted back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 to make it 17-6, but Lock Haven bounced right back with three wins to close out the match. Two of those final three wins were pins, with the third being a major decision. Jeremie Cook (Venice, Fla./Venice) ended his match with Nick Anthony at the 2:30 mark. Cook was leading 8-4 when he recorded the fall. Harry Turner (Howell, N.J./Howell) earned an 8-0 major decision at 197 and Dan Craig (Paw Paw, Mich./Allegan) closed things out with a pin. Craig putting an exclamation point on the match, needing only 47 seconds to pin Chris Weber.

Lock Haven is right back at it tomorrow (Sunday, January 31) when the Bald Eagles travel to Morgantown, W.Va. to take on West Virginia in EWL action.
