Bloomsburg Wrestling Drops Pair at NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals
CEDAR FALLS, IA—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team dropped both its matches on Saturday at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA. The Huskies lost to second ranked Iowa State 38-7 and 22-16 to the University of Northern Iowa and were eliminated from the event.
The Huskies opened the day taking on second ranked Iowa State. The Cyclones won the first four bouts of the day before Bloomsburg’s two-time All-American Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) won by major decision to make it 19-4. One of the four wins for Iowa State was in overtime as the Huskies’ Josh Roosa (Mountain Top/Crestwood) lost 7-5 in overtime at 149 pounds. The Huskies other win of the match came at 174 pounds where Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) beat Chris Spangler by a 3-2 score.
Against Northern Iowa the Huskies got a win by fall from Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) at 133 pounds to take a 6-3 lead. After the Panthers took the next two matches, one by major decision, the host team held a 10-6 lead. Bloomsburg though got a major decision victory by Moley and a win by fall in just 39 seconds from Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) to lead 16-10 with four bouts remaining.
Northern Iowa picked up a win by a 7-6 score at 174 pounds to make it 16-13, then tied the score with a win at 184 before winning at 197 and 285 to post the 22-16 victory.
Bloomsburg falls to 8-4 on the year and will host the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
