Edinboro 36 Clarion 4
EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 16, 2009) – Edinboro opened
Eastern Wrestling League competition in impressive fashion on Friday night,
winning nine of ten bouts to defeat Clarion, 36-4, at McComb Fieldhouse. The
victory boosted the 16th-ranked Fighting Scots to 8-4 and was the 20th straight
EWL dual meet win. Clarion fell to 4-7 and 0-1 in EWL action.
The match got underway at 174 lbs., with Paul Paddock rallying for a 4-3
decision against Scott Joseph. The redshirt freshman trailed 2-1 heading into
the third period. He tied the match with an escape early in the third period,
then recorded his lone takedown with 45 seconds remaining for a 4-2 lead. Joseph
would escape twenty seconds later, but was unable to register a wining takedown.
Paddock is now 8-13.
Chris Honeycutt used a second period escape and 1:26 in riding time for a 2-0
decision over Clint Podish at 184 lbs. Honeycutt, ranked 18th by InterMat, is
now 20-6.
Pat Bradshaw followed with a 7-2 decision over Jamie Luckett at 197 lbs., giving
the junior an 18-5 record. After giving up a takedown in the first minute to
Luckett, he used a reversal to knot the match at 2-2 at the end of one period.
He took a 5-2 lead at the end of two periods with a takedown and a stalling
point, then registered an escape and had a 2:37 riding time advantage.
After suffering back-to-back losses in the Virginia Duals, Joey Fendone, ranked
14th at heavyweight, came up with a vengeance and needed just 57 seconds to pin
Roman Husam. It was the senior’s 38th career fall, tying him with Dave Rowan
for fifth all-time. He boosted his record to 19-5 and now has 94 career wins.
Edinboro made it five straight wins when Paul Donahoe (right) made his debut at
McComb Fieldhouse with a 21-4 technical fall at 3:45 over 20th-ranked Jay
Ivanco. A former national champion at Nebraska who is currently ranked number
one at 125 lbs., Donahoe improved to 22-0.
He opened with the first of five takedowns just 16 seconds into the match, and
led 14-2 at the end of one period. The large lead came courtesy of three
separate near-fall moves good for eight points. In the second period he had a
pair of takedowns before getting back points 45 seconds into the period.
Ricky Deubel continued his hot streak with an 11-2 major decision over Zachary
Oberlander at 133 lbs. The senior got off to fast start, leading 7-2 after one
period thanks to a takedown and a pair of near-fall tilts totaling five points.
He added a takedown in the second, then picked up a penalty point and riding
time in the third. Ranked 18th, Deubel improved to 19-9 and has 93 career wins.
Steve Waite, a former PIAA state champion who wrestled at nearby Fort LeBoeuf
High School, filled in for ill starter Joel Webster at 141 lbs. and came up with
a strong showing, defeating Sal Lascari, 8-3. Like Donahoe, it was Waite’s
first appearance at McComb Fieldhouse after transferring from West Virginia at
the end of the first semester. A takedown at the buzzer to end the first period
gave Waite the lead for good at 4-3, and he dominated the rest of the way.
Following a scoreless second period in which Waite rode out Lascari, he began
the third period with a quick escape, then registered his second takedown with
1:26 remaining for a 7-3 lead. He had a 3 minute 18 second advantage in riding
time for the final point. Waite improved to 4-2.
Torsten Gillespie picked up a forfeit to give the 19th-ranked wrestler at 149
lbs. a 22-11 record and the Boro a 33-0 lead. Older brother Gregor Gillespie
(above), ranked number one at 157 lbs., followed with a 7-0 decision over
Clarion’s Hadley Harrison, a local favorite from nearby General McLane High
School. Gillespie opened up a 4-0 lead after one period with a takedown one
minute into the match, followed by two back points midway through the stanza.
Gillespie would pick up a point for an escape in the second period, then added a
takedown in the last five seconds of the match to improve to 28-0. He tied terry
Kennedy for second in career wins with a 139-10 record.
Clarion picked up its lone win at 165 lbs. as Dominic Ross posted a 12-3 major
decision over Chris Hrunka. Hrunka, now 4-7, was filling in for Jarrod King, who
is out with an injury.
The Fighting Scots are right back in action on Saturday night, hosting Lock
Haven in another EWL match. The action at McComb Fieldhouse gets underway at
7:00 p.m.
