Tim Flynn Wins 134th Match as Fighting Scots Defeat Buffalo, 31-10

BUFFALO , NY (Feb. 13, 2009)  – Edinboro won seven of ten bouts, with five wins by bonus points, to post a 31-10 win over Buffalo on Friday night at Alumni Arena.  The victory boosted the 13th-ranked Fighting Scots to 12-4 on the season.  The Bulls lost their sixth straight dual to fall to 9-8.  Edinboro is now a perfect 13-0 all-time against Buffalo .

The match opened at 141 lbs., with Steve Waite improving to 8-2 with a 12-4 major decision over Mark Lewandowski.  The Bulls would pick up one of their three wins when Desi Green recorded his 32nd win with a narrow 3-2 decision over Torsten Gillespie at 149 lbs.  The loss leaves Gillespie at 23-14.

Gregor Gillespie, the top-ranked wrestler at 157 lbs., picked up his 13th win by technical fall as he dominated John-Martin Cannon, winning 16-0 at 5:36.  That leaves Gillespie with a 32-0 record.  He is 143-10 for his career, leaving the senior two wins shy of Jason Robison’s career record of 145 wins.

Jarrod King made his return after missing a month with an injury.  The senior returned in impressive fashion, as the ninth-ranked wrestler at 165 lbs. posted an 11-1 major decision over Ron Majerus.  That left King with a 23-3 record, and gave Edinboro a 13-3 lead.

Nate Rock pulled Buffalo to within 13-7 as he handed John Foley an 11-2 loss at 174 lbs. in Foley’s first match in two years.  The junior, who just returned recently after last wrestling in 2006-07, took over for Paul Paddock, who suffered a knee injury this week in practice.  Paddock was filling in for Phil Moricone, who is out for the year with a neck injury.

Chris Honeycutt, who came in ranked 17th at 184 lbs., turned in an impressive showing against UB’s Mickey Moran.  After losing to Moran, 3-1 in overtime, a year ago, Honeycutt came away with a 6-1 decision this year.  That leaves Honeycutt with a 24-6 record, while Moran falls to 19-9.

Buffalo ’s Jimmy Hamel decisioned Pat Bradshaw in overtime, 7-5, in the 197 lbs. bout.  Bradshaw had come away with a 4-3 decision earlier in the year.  The junior is now 21-6, while Hamel improved to 26-10.

That closed the match to 16-10, but Edinboro would win the last three matches. Joey Fendone, ranked 12th at heavyweight, picked up a major decision over Brett Correll, 11-2, to give the Fighting Scots a 20-10.  The senior moved within two wins of 100 with his 98th career victory.  He is 23-5.

Top-ranked Paul Donahoe remained undefeated at 26-0 with a 22-7 technical fall at 7:00  over Dan Bishop at 125 lbs.  The Nebraska transfer is now 112-18 for his career.

Ricky Deubel closed out the win with a fall over Talor Golba at 1:43 at 133 lbs.  The senior made its 12 wins in his last 13 matches while improving to 23-9.  He is ranked 19th.  Like Fendone, Deubel is approaching 100 career wins, now at 97-47.

The victory was the 134th of Tim Flynn’s career at Edinboro.  He is one shy of the career record of 135 for wins held by Fred Caro.  The 12th-year coach will have a chance to tie the record on Saturday night as 23rd-ranked Hofstra invades McComb Fieldhouse.  The match gets underway at 7 p.m.
