The Vikings continued their winning ways against John Carroll Tuesday night,
beating the Blue Streaks, 25-17, in nonconference action at the DeCarlo Varsity
Center in University Heights, Ohio.
The Vikings raced out to a quick 9-0 lead with three consecutive decisions to
open the match. Jordan Keller got the bout started at 125 pounds with a 13-6 win
over Elie Naoum scoring points in each period.
Josh Palivoda kept the Vikings on a roll with a 6-0 decision against Kevin Nycz,
while Lawrence Cavello earned four points in the third period to claim a 4-0
victory against Christopher Romeo.
"It was important for us to get off to a quick start tonight," head
coach Ben Stehura said. "John Carroll has a very strong program, but we
pulled together and did what we needed to do get the win."
With John Carroll threatening, team captain JT Miller stepped up and earned an
8-0 major decision victory against Nick Morin. After holding onto a slim 2-0
lead entering the third period, Miller took control earning six points to give
the Vikings a 19-10 lead.
After a Viking loss, John Carroll narrowed the gap to just two points (19-17),
with the final match between Rashard Goff and Tim Lambert. Goff continued his
hot streak tallying four takedowns within the first two periods, before pinning
Lambert at 4:47 giving him his ninth win of the young season.
"Tonight was a big win for us, our guys continue to gain confidence with
each match," Stehura said. "We will continue working hard in the
practice room and prepare for next week's open."
The Vikings have a week off before returning to action Dec. 7 when they travel
to the Penn State Open. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
