CLARION DEFEATS DUQUESNE & MILLERSVILLE
DROPS CLOSE MATCH TO WEST VIRGINIA
(CLARION, PA): Clarion’s NCAA Division I Wrestling team posted a 2-1 record on Saturday, opening the day with a 39-3 win over Millersville and a 40-3 victory over Duquesne, then dropped the nightcap to West Virginia by a 22-14 margin.
Clarion raised its overall record to 7-10 on the season.
Held at W.S. Tippin Gymnasium, the Golden Eagles started at 3pm with a 39-3 win over Millersville. Clarion won 9 of the 10 bouts including pins from Cameron Moran at 133 and Sal Lascari at 141.
Moran, who missed the last two months with a hand injury, pinned Sean Reed at 2:27, following Jay Ivanco’s 6-4 win over John Andel at 125.
Sal Lascari was next up and he pinned Sean Andel at 13-6 and Clarion was out to a 15-0 lead.
Greg Lewis decisioned Mike Greck 4-3 at 149, Hadley Harrison decisioned J.J. Lester 7-5 at 157 and Dominic Ross decisioned Jeremy Brooks 11-5 to make it 24-0.
After Millersville’s Shane Smith edged Scott joseph 5-3 at 177, the Eagles closed out the match with Clint Podish’s 8-2 win over Jason Foor at 184, and Jamie Luckett and Roman Husam received forfeits at 197 and heavyweight to finish the bout.
In that same afternoon session, the Eagles also won 9 of 10 bouts against Duquesne in winning 40-3.
The Dukes Billy Chamberlain edged Jay Ivanco 4-3 at 125, then Moran took a forfeit at 133, Lascari defeated Jayk Cobbs 6-0 at 141 and Greg Lewis decisioned Alex Martinez 6-4 at 149 to put Clarion ahead 12-3.
Harrison pinned Dan Pauley at 4:23 at 157, and Ross decisioned Tony Clark 6-4 at 165 to give Clarion a 21-3 lead.
Scott Joseph had an 11-3 major decision over Ryan Sula at 174, Podish and Luckett won by forfeit, and heavyweight Roman Husam won a 6-2 decision over John Simmons.
The 7pm start against West Virginia was also an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet and the Eagles drew a crowd of about 750 for the match.
Clarion jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead when Ivanco notched a 12-3 major decision over Tyler Smith at 125 and Cameron Moran won 13-4 over Tyler Oravec at 133.
Ivanco had 4 takedowns, a reversal, stall point and riding time for his win.
Moran meanwhile opened up a big 7-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and a three and two point nearfall. An escape in the second made it 8-0, before Oravec notched two third period takedowns. Moran counter with his own takedown with about 50 seconds left and he rode his opponent out for the major decision.
Sal Lascari lost a tough 5-4 decision to Colin Johnston. With the score tied 4-4 early in the third, Lascari came very close to score a go ahead takedown on several occasions, but could not finish the move. Johnston won on riding time.
WVU’s Dave Jauregui won 13-6 over Lewis at 141, and Clarion’s Harrison countered with a 5-3 decision over Ryan Goodman at 157, giving Clarion an 11-6 lead.
But WVU reeled off three straight wins to take a 16-11 lead. Donnie Jones majored Dom Ross 15-6 at 165, Kurt Brenner won 6-1 over Joseph at 174 and Lance Bryson edged Clint Podish 5-2 at 184.
Jamie Luckett brought the Eagles back at 197 with a 5-2 win over Kyle Rooney pulling Clarion to within 16-14 heading to heavyweight.
With the match on the line, 2008 NCAA Qualifier Dustin Rogers of WVU pinned Roman Husam at 1:08 to give the Moutaineers the win.
CLARION NOTES: Moran, Harrison, and Luckett were 3-0 on the day… Ivanco, LAscari, Lewis, Ross and Podish were 2-1…. Clarion hosts Bloomsburg on Friday, January 30th at 7pm at Tippin Gym… And Also hosts Rider at1pm on Saturday, January 31st.
