Gillespie when the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships
begin on Thursday, March 20 at the
Scottrade
Center
in
St. Louis
,
MO.
Seeking to become Edinboro’s
first two-time national champion, the junior is the number one seed at 157 lbs.
Gillespie won the 149 lb. national championship a year ago, joining Sean
O’Day and Josh Koscheck as Edinboro’s lone Division I national champions.
He moved up to 157 lbs. this year and has posted a 32-2 record, with the
losses to
Illinois
’ Mike Poeta, who is seeded second, and
Minnesota
’s C.P. Schlatter, who is the fifth seed.
Gillespie, a two-time All-American who finished seventh at 149 lbs. as a
freshman, faces Spencer Manley of Navy in the first round.
While Edinboro qualified all ten wrestlers for the first time in school
history,
Jarrod
King is the only other Fighting Scot to earn a seed.
The junior transfer from
Oklahoma
looks to join his brother Matt as an All-American.
King is seeded 12th at 165 lbs. and will face
Penn
State
’s Dave Rella in the first round. King
has a 30-7 record.
